LearnEnglish Sounds Right is a free pronunciation chart provided by the British Council for English language learners and teachers worldwide.
For English language learners, this app offers a convenient way to practice sounds and pronunciation. Whether you struggle with understanding phonemic symbols or need help with specific sounds, LearnEnglish Sounds Right is accessible on your phone or tablet for anytime, anywhere practice. Simply tap on a sound and hear it instantly. You can also listen to three example words with the selected sound by tapping the downward arrow symbol.
For English language teachers, this app is a valuable resource for teaching pronunciation. Whether you are using phonemic script in your classroom or trying to teach individual sounds and symbols, LearnEnglish Sounds Right can be easily installed on your students' devices or the class set of devices.
The app organizes pure vowels according to mouth shape, similar to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart. Diphthongs are grouped based on their second sound, while consonants are arranged from front to back of the mouth. The top two rows of consonants are paired as unvoiced and voiced. When tapping on a plosive consonant, a schwa (ə) appears as it was recorded with a schwa for clarity.
